Evangelicals: The Bible Commands You To Test The Spirit Living Within You!

All Christians believe that Jesus Christ dwells within them. Evangelicals take it a step further. Evangelical Christians believe that they know that Jesus dwells within them because they can perceive his presence within them, communicating with them, providing guidance to them each and every day of their lives. Many evangelicals believe that if one cannot perceive the presence of Christ within you, you are most likely not a true believer. It is this perception of the presence of Jesus within them that provides great comfort and security to many evangelicals. I know. I used to be one of them. But how can evangelicals be 100% certain that the spirit which they perceive living within them is really…Jesus? Have they ever asked Jesus to prove his presence more definitively?

Over the last 10 years since my deconversion from Christianity, I have been asked numerous times by apologists what it would take for me to believe again.

“Tell Jesus to perform a miracle for me!” is my response.

“Tell Jesus to levitate my coffee table! Tell Jesus to levitate my coffee table three feet off the floor for five minutes, and I will believe.”

But Jesus never levitates my coffee table. Jesus refuses to levitate my coffee table for even five seconds! Why?? Christians tell me that the reason why Jesus won’t levitate my coffee table is because Jesus doesn’t like to be tested. Jesus operates on his time line, not mine. Who am I to think I can make Jesus jump through hoops like a show dog?

But did you know, dear evangelical Christian, that the Bible commands Christians to test spirits. The Bible commands Christians to test all invisible spirits, to determine if they are from God:

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. –I John 4

So if true believers follow the teachings of the Bible they should test EVERY spirit to see if it is from God; God the Creator. And if the spirit is truly of God the Creator, the spirit will do what? Answer: confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh.

The spirit will SPEAK!

“Jesus isn’t going to speak to you in an audible voice, you silly atheist,” apologists will respond. “That isn’t how Jesus does things.”

Really? The people of Jesus’ day and Paul’s day believed that invisible spirits speak with audible voices.

For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area. 11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.” 13 He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. –Mark 5

Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them. 13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, [a]“We [b]exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.” 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?” 16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, [c]overpowered them, and prevailed against [d]them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. –Acts 19

So if a modern Christian apologist tells you that the spirit of Jesus, the spirit you believe “dwells within you”, will not speak to you in an audible voice, only in a “still, small voice”, tell him he is quoting the Old Testament. Remind him that the Christian New Testament clearly states above that if a spirit will not speak; if it will not confess audibly that Jesus has come in the flesh; it is not of God. It is of Satan.

The spirit within you is not of God if it will not speak to you in an audible voice, dear evangelical.

Not hearing voices? The spirit inside you is not Jesus!

  1. Let’s turn to the Good Book.

Isaiah 7:10-12 says. “Again the Lord spoke to [King] Ahaz, “Ask the Lord your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.” But Ahaz said, “I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.””

Bad things happened when Ahaz *didn’t* put the Lord to the test.
