Hey Gary! Now that You Know that Christianity is False, Why Not Become a Jew?

Western Wall, Jerusalem, Jews, Pray, Orthodox, Holy

Feedback from a reader:

Dear Gary, I too have discovered the paganism of Christianity. My question to you is have you looked into the Tanakh (Old Testament) and made sure that Judaism is not right for you? I feel that in 1948 GOD did something amazing. (1) He gave the Jews back their land – fulfilling prophecy and (2) He had the Dead Sea Scrolls discovered – which lends a lot of proof that the Tanakh has changed little over so many years. Can’t wait to hear your answer. Love your work I see Christianity as an enabling religion that causes people to shrink from responsibility because Jesus takes the wheel of their lives. Ugh!

Gary:

Sorry, I find Judaism’s superstitions just as preposterous as those of Christianity. And if forced to choose between the imaginary god of Christianity (Jesus) and the imaginary god of Judaism (Yahweh), I’ll take Jesus any day of the week.

  1. How someone could see the problems with Christianity but not with Judaism is beyond me. Another case of really wanting it to be true regardless of evidence.

How do you know that God did this and that it wasn’t something like the work of a lot of people trying very hard to fulfill perceived prophecies? A “prophecy” with no timeline or other specifics is a bit like predicting that it will rain every day for a week sometime in the future.

So what? How does this tell us anything about the truth of the contents of the book? Even if the contents of the book haven’t changed it doesn’t make the contents true,

Have you looked into all of the other worlds religions and made sure they’re not right for you either? If God exists, and wants me to worship him, then God can tell me himself exactly what he expects and why I should bother.

Now, I have looked many of the worlds major religions including Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, and even some of the smaller eastern religions. I would categorize all of them as largely superstitious nonsense that don’t survive even basic scrutiny.

With regard to Judaism given the mythology that’s present in Genesis and Exodus I’m reasonably convinced that it’s just another man made religion.

    1. About ten years ago there was I think a National Geographic show about a woman who became dissatisfied with Catholicism (I guess some of the doctrines or whatever, she didn’t agree with) and converted to Islam. . Most of the show was her traveling to Mecca for the pilgrimage as a white North American woman. She had to get her son to sign a letter giving her permission to travel. I shook my head while watching, wondering what she was going to do in a few years when she realized all the problems with Islam and the Koran. On to the next religion? I wonder if she ever decided to view all religion with consistency rather than just being critical of the one she was presently in.
Dollars to doughnuts she’s not longer a Muslim

        1. Yeah, out of a group of options, some options seem unpleasant, like maybe we are alone in an uncaring universe, or maybe some kind of “creator” who doesn’t know we exist or maybe doesn’t care. Those are ignored because they are scary. So then just a smaller subset with poor evidence are pursued because they are comforting. Then just bounce around within the subset.
