You are only a Fundamentalist if YOU say you are, Dammit!

The term Fundamentalism gets thrown around quite a bit.  Most people who use it have no idea what it really means.  Just recently I got a hate filled blog comment from a homophilic atheist (Gary, hell-bound, soon-to-fry-like-KFC chicken, author of Escaping Christian Fundamentalism blog) misusing the term (I will publish responsible comments of dissenting opinions, but not histrionic ad hominem  rants — even if they would be good for a few laughs (Sounds like he’s not a big fan of Paul T. McCain, either).)

As a matter of fairness, respect and common decency, only groups that refer to themselves as Fundamentalist should be referred to that way by others.

                                                                           —Fundamentalist Lutheran Pastor, Erik,
                                                                                                            at The Sheep Dog’s Spot

Pastor Erik?  Is that you?

So you can only call someone a fascist, if he thinks he is a fascist?
So you can only call someone a bigot, if he thinks he is a bigot?
So you can only call someone a gay-bashing, hate-monger, if he thinks he is a gay-bashing, hate-monger?

What do you think of this one, Pastor Erik:

You can only call someone a sinner, if he thinks he is a sinner!

YOU are a fundamentalist, (I don’t know your politics well enough to call you a fascist…yet), bigoted, gay-bashing, hate-mongering…SINNER, Pastor Erik.  Put that in your smug, pompous pipe and smoke it.

                                                             —-Sincerely,
                                                                   Gary, the Homophile
