Which religion swept the world with millions of converts in just a few hundred years?

This religion began with an incredible miracle attested to by multiple purported eyewitnesses.  It quickly spread to many cities and countries, adding thousands and even millions of new believers in just a few hundred years.  This religion teaches love for, and obedience to, God, strict sexual morality, and love, compassion, and generosity to one’s neighbor.  This religion initially suffered significant persecution.

Who is it?

AnswerThe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons)

In 1830 there were six Mormons.  Today, less than 200 years later, there are over 15,000,000 Mormons, living in almost every country on the planet.  No religion, even Christianity, can come close to this kind of initial growth and global expansion.

Rapid growth of a religious movement does NOT prove that its beliefs are true.

Witnesses of the Gold Plates and the Book of Mormon

Joseph and the plates
“Father, mother, you do not know how happy I am; the Lord has now caused the plates to be shown to three more besides myself. They have seen an angel, who has testified to them, and they will have to bear witness to the truth of what I have said, for now they know for themselves that I do not go about to deceive the people, and I feel as if I was relieved of a burden which was almost too heavy for me to bear, and it rejoices my soul that I am not any longer to be entirely alone in the world.”

— Joseph Smith Jr. June 1829.

It’s a common misconception by people outside the church that only Joseph Smith ever saw the golden plates. Their skepticism in believing his story is understandable considering they believe they’re only taking his word for it. Luckily, this is not the case. Eleven others we’re shown the plates by Joseph, and allowed to handle them. Three of the eleven were blessed to see the Angel Moroni, himself. Below, you will find their written testimony that what they saw is true. These affidavits are published at the beginning of each Book of Mormon. I have also included bios and quotes from them affirming their testimony years after they originally saw them. There were others who had experiences with, or surrounding, the golden plates so I’ve included their accounts also.

“For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us. That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.”
John 1:2-4

  1. Yes, but what was the Mormon expansion's context ? Few, or no persecutions, great isolationnism which made it very easy to handle the faith from generation to generation, doubled with an intense missionary work and a great adaptiveness to the surrending world (no real questioning about the emerging American set of values, for example). Add to the whole the very convenient polygamous way of life, and modern pioneering communication means, and you'll got a powerful rational cocktail, none of whose ingredient was available to the Early Church.
The latter was facing continuous hostility, both from authorities and mobs ; was preaching something completely different from whatever was existing among the Gentiles, and in the middle of them, provoking apostasies, and so forth.

    No, really, you can't compare.
